Synopsis of Patience
All the maidens in the village are besotted with Reginald Bunthorne, a moody and handsome poet. But Bunthorne only has eyes for the milkmaid, Patience.
There’s just one problem: Bunthorne’s artistic ways are a sham—an act to make women love him. He doesn’t even like poetry!
Patience, a simple dairy-maid, has never loved anyone (except an aunt). She does recall, however, that she used to love her childhood sweetheart, who now happens to be a real poet named Archibald Grosvenor. However, Patience feels she cannot marry Grosvenor because he is just too perfect and has come to realize that true love must be “utter unselfishness.” Loving such perfection would be most selfish indeed.
In the meantime, the quite serious platoon of heavy dragoon guards, who are decidedly not “aesthetic” at all, find themselves in a nasty scenario. These dragoons were meant to marry the village maidens and yet now find themselves dismayed and perplexed by their sudden loss of prospects.
One of Gilbert & Sullivan’s most successful shows, “Patience,” is a rollicking fiasco of satire that pits the straight-laced ideals of the Victorian era against the passions and indulgences of the 1870s aesthetic movement, ridiculing each in this delightful comedy.
